about

The end of a relationship is bewildering and painful. Christa learned this version of a quintessential Bill Monroe break-up song from Sylvia and Chuck Herold around a late-night fire circle at Lark Camp in the early 2000s. We often close the evening with this song, and its final ‘goodbye.’

lyrics

LYRICS:

I don’t know; I don’t know
where I’m going, or what I’m doing.
It makes no difference what I do, without you.
You know I love you, my darling, but now that we must part,
I realize that from the start, you were untrue.

(Chorus)
Well, I heard a bluebird high on a mountainside,
and this little bird would sing its little song.
So, I’ll sigh. I’ll cry. I’ll even want to die,
because the one that I love is gone.

When you came into my life, I thought that love would see us through.
You’ll never know how much I needed you.
You know I love you, my darling, so I’ll try and set you free.
Goodbye, it’s the last you’ll hear from me.

(Chorus)
